Utah Patients Coalition Impact

Utah Patients Coalition (UPC) has made remarkable strides in medical cannabis and therapeutic psilocybin policy advancements within Utah. Since its inception, UPC has been fervently devoted to impacting the lives of hundreds of Utah patients, reshaping policies, and expanding knowledge in the medical field. One of UPC’s most noteworthy accomplishments is the introduction and establishment of groundbreaking programs and initiatives; inlcuding the Utah Medical Cannabis Act. Here’s a more in-depth look into the various ways UPC is making a difference.

SB200: Therapeutic Psilocybin

UPC is on the front lines of pioneering mental health solutions, as evidenced by our pivotal role in introducing the Therapeutic Psilocybin Pilot Program. This cutting-edge initiative allows for the use of psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms, as a tool to help tackle Utah’s mental health crisis. This initiative has paved the way for a new frontier in mental health treatment options in Utah and potentially nationwide.

Patient Education

We believe in empowering Utah’s patients with reliable, accurate, and accessible information. Our collaborative efforts at various educational events, resource creation, and published articles are all geared towards demystifying complex therapeutic options and promoting informed healthcare decisions. We’ve reached a wide audience, helping them to better understand their health, their options, and the benefits and risks associated with emerging treatments like psilocybin and medical cannabis.

Support Services

UPC is committed to providing personalized and accessible one-on-one support to individuals navigating their therapeutic treatment options. Our team offers valuable assistance and guidance, helping patients understand the landscape of treatment options and select the one that best suits their individual needs and circumstances. This commitment to personalized support underscores our mission to put patients first.

Policy Development

Our role in shaping policy extends beyond introducing new therapies. UPC has been instrumental in establishing and developing the medical cannabis program in Utah. While we celebrate the strides made, we understand that our work is far from over. We continue to actively refine and improve the program in line with our commitment to Utah’s patients and the broader community.

LMP Program

We’ve been active in creating pathways for physicians to provide their patients with cannabis recommendations. Under the LMP Program, physicians licensed to prescribe a controlled substance can now recommend cannabis to 15 of their patients. This has helped to increase patient access to medical cannabis across Utah.

QMP Patient Caps

Advocacy efforts by the UPC led to the increase of patient caps for Qualified Medical Providers (QMPs) and the removal of caps on independent labs testing cannabis. This development means more patients have access to medical cannabis, and more product is tested for safety, improving both accessibility and quality.

Terpene Testing

Understanding the terpene profiles of cannabis products is crucial to optimizing their therapeutic benefits. UPC has pushed for terpene testing, enhancing the knowledge and understanding of medical cannabis and its effects for patients and healthcare providers alike.

Cannabis Product Types

To meet the diverse needs of patients, UPC has advocated for expanding the forms of available cannabis products. Thanks to our efforts, product forms now include aerosols, edibles with sugar, capsules, and more. This expansion allows for greater personalization of medical cannabis treatments, catering to the individual preferences and therapeutic needs of Utah’s patients.
