All patients must hold a valid medical cannabis card to legally purchase and possess a medical cannabis product in Utah.

Applying for or Renewing a Medical Cannabis Card

 Medical cannabis cards can only be obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services.

 Medical Cannabis Patient Card

  • Issued to patients 18 years of age and older
  • Valid for six months upon initial
    issuance, then six months upon renewal.
  • Card for patients age 18-20 must have card approved by Compassionate Use Board

Most cases, a temporary card is issued for immediate use. DHHS will issue the medical cannabis card soon after and email a copy to the patient.

    • Valid for 60 days upon initial issuance,
    then six months upon renewal (with
    additional fee)

Medical Cannabis Non-Utah Resident Card

Patients who are not Utah residents or
who have been residents for less than
45 days
• Must have a currently valid medical
cannabis card or the equivalent of a
medical cannabis card under the laws of
another state, district, territory,
commonwealth, or insular possession
of the US
• Must have been diagnosed with a
qualifying condition
• Issued for no more than two visitation
periods per calendar year of up to 21
calendar days per visitation period

With the medical cannabis card, purchase medical cannabis from a medical cannabis pharmacy in Utah. Bring your card and a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, to the pharmacy. Before making the first purchase, consult with a medical cannabis pharmacist. Some pharmacies may require an appointment in advance for the consultation.
